What’s it like to run a thriving boutique side by side with your partner? In this episode, Serena and Java Patterson share the inspiring story of how they transformed The Farmhouse from a local vendor space into a successful boutique rooted in community. They walk through the key moves that fueled their growth, from switching their POS system from Clover to Shopify to streamline inventory and cut fees, to using smart merchandising to create an inviting shopping experience.

They balanced tourist and local customer needs, embraced Retail Bootcamp strategies to master their financials and grow organically through social media, and more. But it’s not just about business—Serena and Java also get real about what it’s like to build and run a store as a couple. They talk about setting boundaries, adding humor to hectic days, and leaning on each other through the highs and lows. Whether you’re dreaming of opening your own shop or looking for ways to grow with heart, this episode is packed with personal stories and practical takeaways you won’t want to miss!

Buying a Boutique with Zero Experience and Zero Regrets

On Roles & Relationship

While many might assume Serena is the face of the brand and Java works behind the scenes, the two bring equal energy to their business, just in different ways. Serena, the creative visionary, shares how Java lights up any room—literally dancing around in leopard shorts at a themed event. The balance between them is what makes their partnership work. “She’s the creative… I just need to dance for 30 minutes a day, and everything’s cool,” Java jokes.

Despite Serena being more introverted by nature, their shared passion and mutual respect are evident. Ashley points out how refreshing it is to see such an evenly yoked couple show up in business with equal dedication.

Retail Bootcamp: Implement in Real Time

When asked what advice they’d give to other Retail Bootcamp students, Serena didn’t hesitate: implement as you go. She explains how they’d pause videos, check if they’d done that step yet, and then take immediate action. “If not, you’ll forget it,” she says.

Java adds that diving into the financial sections of Bootcamp was transformational. Learning to understand profit, branding with intention, and the “why” behind every inventory decision has made a massive impact.

“Understand your numbers, understand your branding, and be a community builder.”

From Bootcamp to Boutique of Black: Mastering Ads

After Retail Bootcamp, Serena and Java joined Boutique of Black and took on ads—a move that many small business owners find intimidating. But with the guidance of coaches like Jeff, the couple says the process was seamless and incredibly rewarding.

They now see customers driving from over an hour away, saying “I saw you on Facebook!” or “I follow you on Instagram.” While they expected ads to boost online sales, they didn’t realize the impact it would have on local foot traffic as well.

“People don’t realize this, but running ads can be a major visibility tool for brick-and-mortar stores too.”

Their Income-Driving Focus? Social & Strategy.

If given two extra hours in the day, Serena would spend them on social media—one of the best organic growth tools at their disposal. Java, on the other hand, would dive deeper into backend ad strategy, Google search, and keywords—learning how both worlds complement each other.

Their advice? Don’t overlook the “unsexy” tasks—like pulling numbers or re-merchandising your entire store. Those are the things that move the needle, even if they’re not glamorous.

Favorite Pieces of Business Advice

Java shares a quote that drives him:
“The answers you’re looking for lie in the work you’re not doing.”
That’s the mindset that helps push them through every rut and keeps the fire burning in their business.

For Serena, a favorite quote she’s even had painted on their boutique wall:
“This place where you are right now, God circled on a map for you.”
It’s a reminder to stay present and faithful through every high and low.

What We Learned from Serena & Java:

  • Implement education in real time to avoid overwhelm.
  • Knowing your numbers gives you freedom.
  • Ads aren’t just for e-commerce—they boost in-person foot traffic too.
  • Your mindset and energy directly influence your results.
  • Faith and community are powerful foundations in business.

Feeling inspired? Retail Bootcamp and Boutique of Black aren’t just courses—they’re launchpads for boutique owners ready to scale with intention and support.
