Balancing Chaos, and Embracing the Entrepreneurial Journey

The Struggles and Challenges of ADHD

Danielle and her family are no strangers to ADHD, with both parents and children navigating the complexities of this neurodiverse condition. While some of their children are currently undergoing diagnoses, Danielle shares how her own experience has been a journey of finding the right medication and learning strategies that help her manage her daily life.

“For me, finding the right medicine has taken years,” Danielle explains, “but I’ve also had to teach myself tips and tricks that work for me.” One of the simple yet effective methods she’s found is removing distractions—like putting her phone across the room. “If it’s in my hand, I will look at it and get lost in those notifications. You can’t hold it in your hand and expect to get other things done.”

Embracing the Gifts of ADHD

ADHD isn’t just about managing challenges; it also comes with its own set of gifts. One of the key gifts that Danielle highlights is creativity. “The creativity and ability to switch between ideas and dream up things—and then make them happen—is the beauty of ADHD,” she says.

However, accepting these gifts can take time. Danielle admits that she still struggles with the lifelong shame of being late or missing appointments. “I have time blindness,” she says. “It’s not that I disrespect other people; my brain just doesn’t work that way.” Overcoming these feelings of shame and reframing ADHD as a set of strengths rather than weaknesses has been a significant part of Danielle’s journey.

Supporting Children with ADHD: Conversations Around the House

With both Danielle and her husband having ADHD, their children are naturally influenced by it too. Danielle emphasizes the importance of normalizing ADHD and shifting the narrative to show that it’s not something to be ashamed of. “We talk to our kids about it all the time. We’ve been there too, and look what we’ve built. You can have everything you want, you just need to figure out what works for you.”

This open conversation creates a supportive environment where their children don’t feel isolated in their struggles. Danielle also recalls an interaction during a field day at her daughter’s school where a child with special needs was labeled “different.” Danielle responded, “We all have special needs. Every single person learns differently, has different needs. It doesn’t have to be such a stigma.”

Strategies for ADHD Success

Over the years, Danielle has discovered several strategies that help her manage ADHD while balancing life and business. Here are a few:

  • Put Away Distractions: One simple yet effective strategy Danielle uses is putting her phone across the room. It helps her avoid getting sidetracked by notifications and allows her to focus on the task at hand.
  • Find What Works for You: Whether it’s medication or strategies like creating systems and processes in your business, Danielle emphasizes the importance of finding what works for you. “It’s not a one-size-fits-all situation,” she says. “You have to figure out what fits your life.”
  • Celebrate the Gifts of ADHD: Reframing ADHD as a strength is key to success. From creativity to adaptability, acknowledging the positive aspects of ADHD helps to shift the narrative and foster self-acceptance.
  • Create Supportive Conversations: Openly talking about ADHD at home helps normalize the experience. This reduces stigma and creates a safe space for children to express themselves without shame.

Managing ADHD in Business

When it comes to running a business with ADHD, Danielle is all too familiar with the challenges of staying focused, organized, and efficient. However, she has found that systems and processes are crucial to keeping her on track. “Processes are really important,” she says, “especially when you’re trying to juggle the demands of running a business and managing ADHD.”

One of the most “unsexy” yet impactful processes Danielle has implemented is optimizing her website’s functionality. “I’ve learned that making a website user-friendly and optimizing it for SEO can have a huge impact on my business,” she says. By focusing on user experience and keeping her website functional, Danielle’s business continues to grow through increased online visibility.

Final Thoughts: Overcoming Challenges and Finding Success with ADHD

Living with ADHD presents a unique set of challenges, but as Danielle shares, it also offers unique gifts and opportunities. Whether it’s embracing creativity, finding effective strategies, or fostering supportive conversations, there are many ways to manage ADHD both in life and business. By learning to work with ADHD, rather than against it, Danielle has found a way to thrive and build a successful business while supporting her family through their ADHD journey.
