TikTok is a HUGE player in the social media industry right now and is not showing any signs of slowing down. There is a multitude of reasons why you need to be implementing TikTok into your content marketing strategy, from the viral marketing potential to the opportunity to reach an entirely new audience. Let’s get into how you can utilize TikTok for your small business.
The first step to small business TikTok success is consistency. Consistency on TikTok doesn’t just mean sticking to a consistent posting schedule, it’s also following and engaging with other creators and staying active to stay on top of trends. By being intentional with your scrolling, you can find countless ideas and inspiration for content! If you are lucky enough to hop on a trend early, you have the potential to go viral!
Focus on Storytelling
TikTok is NOT a hard-selling platform. This is why brands have the potential to succeed so much on TikTok – because they are not focused on hard-selling, but on connecting and relating to their customers and telling a story. One way that you can do this is by taking a trending sound and applying it to your niche. No one wants to follow a TikTok page that feels like one huge ad. Tell a story with your products that will make users WANT to follow and engage with your content.
Try Out Different Types of Content
Try out fun, relatable, or motivational content. Steering away from the hard selling is what is going to really resonate and connect with viewers. Ditch the hard selling and show your brand personality. There are so many different types of videos boutique owners can create, from try-on videos, day-in-the-life videos, or funny trending sounds.
Track What’s Working
With a TikTok pro account, you have access to your analytics on each video. Start tracking these to get a better insight into what’s working and what’s not. The TikTok algorithm can be a bit confusing but this can shine some light on the basics! We do this here at the Hub with a simple google spreadsheet that tracks important metrics for each video such as likes, comments, shares and watch time. This can help you to understand post timings, what type of posts get the most engagement, etc.
Once you have a good gauge of your metrics, hover down on what IS working. So many times a creator or a business will go viral with one video, and stick to that same style of video over and over and still get success. Once you take a look at your metrics and gain an understanding of them, analyze your best performing videos – what about this video made it perform well? How can I make this better? How can I duplicate this idea?
3 Second Rule
Be aware and implement the 3-second rule in your content creation. The 3-second rule ensures that you grab the viewer’s attention within the first three seconds. One way that the TikTok algorithm works is by first showing your video to a small batch of people, if that batch of people watches through the entire video, the platform will increase the number of people it is shown to. This is reflected in your watch time. Studies have shown that if you can grab the viewer’s attention in the first 3 seconds of a TikTok video, they are more likely to have a higher watch time. Get creative with those intros to hook the viewer!
Analyze and Get Creative
Pay attention to what other creators in your industry are doing – what’s working for them and what’s not? Are they doing any fun trends that you can also do without copying them? TikTok success takes creativity and good storytelling skills. This means lots of brainstorming time and sometimes listening to a trending sound over and over until you get an idea of how you can apply it to your niche! Allow yourself to have that creative brainstorming and “scrolling” time.
Show Off your Brands Personality
Lastly, have fun and show off your brand personality! Your audience wants to connect with you and TikTok has a more casual and personal feel, making this the perfect platform to connect with your audience.
