Busy or Effective? The Question That Can Change Everything

APPLE PODCAST | SPOTIFY | YOUTUBE

We all have that one friend. You ask how they’re doing and the answer is always the same: “Busy.”
And hey, maybe you are that friend. (I’ve been that friend too.)

But here’s the truth: busy is BS. Being busy and being effective are two very different things—and only one of them will actually move the needle in your business and your life.

Let’s break it down.

Busy or Effective? The Question That Can Change Everything

Everyone’s Busy… But Is That What Matters?

Before I had kids, I thought I was busy. And now? With three kids in sports and a calendar that looks like a game of Tetris, I realize just how wrong I was. Everyone is busy in their own way. But that doesn’t mean they’re accomplishing what truly matters.

If you’re a business owner, this message is especially for you. Stop wearing “busy” like a badge of honor.
**Busy isn’t the goal—**being effective is.

So, What Does Effective Look Like?

For me, being effective doesn’t mean I hit a certain sales goal or cleared my inbox. It means I made real progress on the big rocks in my business—the projects or actions that generate income, drive growth, or truly support my team.

Think about your own workday. Were you:

  • Checking off small, never-ending tasks just to feel productive?
    (Busy)
  • Or making bold progress on the most important goals for your business?
    (Effective)

Here’s a tip: At the end of each day, I make a “To-Done List.” Not a to-do list for tomorrow, but a reflection of what I actually accomplished today.
Try doing this for a week—you’ll quickly see whether your days are full or fruitful.

Effectiveness Goes Beyond Work

Being effective isn’t just about business. It’s also about how you show up in your life.

I ask myself daily:

  • Did I show up as the mom and wife I want to be?
  • Did I tuck my kids in and tell them I love them—even when I was exhausted?
  • Did I prioritize them or pour my energy into everything else first?

And since recovering from knee surgery, I’ve had to ask myself a new question:

  • Did I take care of myself today?

Did I do my PT? Drink water? Get my steps in? Move my body?

It’s easy to cut corners when you’re “too busy,” but take it from me: don’t wait until your health forces you to slow down. Your well-being is the foundation for everything else—your family, your business, your future.

Your Calendar = Your Priorities

If you showed me your calendar, I could tell you what your priorities are.

So what does yours say about you?

You have a choice every day: to be busy, or to be effective. To chase tasks, or to chase purpose. To live on autopilot, or to live on mission.

It starts with one question: Am I busy, or am I effective?
